Captain David Albers is the Coordinator of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security division of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department (EMHSD). Capt. Albers is an army vet who joined the Sheriff’s Dept. in 2005 and was named the coordinator for the EMHSD in the spring of this year.
The Sheriff’s Department consists of 3 divisions: Patrol, Jail, and the EMHSD. He explained that his division coordinates the community’s safety by writing plans, conducting training exercises, and ensuring resources are in place. They ensure readiness for disasters such as tornadoes, floods, chemical spills, and pandemics. Afterward, they guide recovery efforts and help communities get state and federal assistance.
In times of emergency, his division runs the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), located at 2100 E Empire in Benton Harbor. All the service agencies in the community meet there and guide emergencies and recovery efforts when a disaster occurs.
